Strippers and marriage

I’ve got two unrelated news items for you: one on strippers and one on marriage.

Let’s start with the strippers. If I had a nickel for every time I said that…

The city of Louisville’s new regulations on adult entertainment establishments are way harsh. For example, the ordinance prohibits the sale of alcohol and, I shit you not, nudity. If it is the city’s goal to force all strip clubs out of business by fall, then they will probably be successful. Read Jonathan Meador’s fascinating feature story for the Louisville Eccentric Observer (LEO) Weekly.

I presided (yes, I) over the wedding of my best friend yesterday. I am awesome and am very cheap ($10 per parental tear drop), for all you pre-nuptial couples out there ;) And today was the first day that gay couples could get married in New York. Be sure to listen to NPR’s coverage; it made my eyes leak.

To the hundreds that were married today in New York, and to my wonderful best friend and her wonderful husband, I say, Congrats, you crazy kids! Happy ever after!

Bachmann puts on flip flops to talk gay marriage

Presidential nopeful, Michele Bachmann, is at it again with her words of wisdom.

And no, that wasn’t a typo.  I want her to lose.

The Minnesota representative made contradictory remarks about her stance on marriage equality, following the New York marriage vote.

She spoke to Fox News about marriage equality, and portions of her interview were featured on the political website, The Hill. Bachmann believes the people of New York should be able to support marriage equality…

I do believe in the 10th amendment and I do believe in self-determination for the states.”

…if that self-determination is in favor of her views.

Rep. Bachmann went on to say she believes marriage should be defined, federally, as between a man and a woman, and she believes federal law will always trump state law.

In other words, good for New York, but Bachmann wants to take away your rights in the name of God and our fine government.

It is completely hypocritical for Bachmann to say she supports a federal decision and a state decision about gay marriage, with the stipulation those decisions are the same.  If she believes marriage should be federally defined between a man and a woman, she is insinuating states, such as New York, do no have the right to support marriage equality.

Futhermore,  I am sick of people saying it is reasonable for the public to decide if citizens should have a human right.  The 10th amendment shouldn’t even be an issue in this matter.   Whenever I see a Confederate flag, I am thankful freedom is not a majority decision .

Giving the majority the power to oppress the minority is not a democratic value.

Bachmann better get her facts straight and realize marriage isn’t so straight anymore.
